Saturation killed my friend's business

Writer: Callan WongCallan Wong

"I'm done. The market's too saturated."

That's what James told me last week before shutting down his copywriting business…

He'd spent 6 months trying to "make it."

Sent hundreds of pitches…

Got ghosted more times than I did on Tinder…

"There are just too many copywriters now," he said.

And you know what?

He was right…

There ARE too many copywriters…

Too many copywriters sending the same templated pitches.

Too many copywriters offering "compelling copy that converts."

Too many copywriters racing to the bottom on Upwork.

But here's what James didn't understand...

While he was complaining about saturation,

I landed three new clients.

Same market…

Same timing…

Same "saturation."

Different outcome.

See, saturation didn't kill James's business…

His response to it did.

While he was blaming the market…

Others were, creating unique angles instead of copying templates.

Building real relationships instead of mass-pitching.

Solving specific problems instead of offering generic services.

The truth?

Saturation is the best thing that ever happened to serious copywriters.

It's like a natural filter…

It scares away the ones who want easy money.

Eliminates the "get rich quick" crowd.

Weeds out anyone not willing to adapt.

And leaves more opportunity for those who stick around.

Remember Starbucks?

When they launched, people said the coffee market was saturated.

Now there's one on every corner.

Why?

Because they didn't just sell coffee…

They sold an experience.

That's what real copywriters do.

We don't just sell words…

We sell solutions…

Understanding…

Results…

So yeah, the market is saturated...

With mediocrity.

Excellence? That's still rare as hell.

And clients can tell the difference.

To standing out,

- Callan
